Harago Kaizan started learning shakuhachi from his father, Harago Keizan, at the age of 10. He then studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Ishigaki Seizan I and studied contemporary music under Yonezawa Hiroshi. He passed the NHK Japanese Music Audition, graduated from the 44th class of the NHK Japanese Music Skills Development Association, and received the Encouragement Award at the Kumamoto National Japanese Music Competition (Ensemble section, with koto player Otsuki Kunihiro) He performed in the film "To the Flowering Land of a Million" (starring Ishimure Michiko, directed by Jin Dawei, planned and produced by Fujiwara Shoten). Kaizan performed in the Bamboo Art Show in Meishan, Sichuan Province, China (a concert featuring bamboo instruments from around the world). He is currently a Tozan-ryū Dai-Shihan (Grand Master), a member of the Japanese Music Group, and a member of the Shishi-no-Kai. He has performed on stages all over Japan, as well as on television, radio, and recordings, and is also active in promoting the shakuhachi through school performances and training the next generation of musicians.
