From an early age, Satō Shōzan studied shakuhachi under his father, Tozan-ryū Dai-Shihan Chikurin-ken Satō Kanzan, and koto under his mother, Satō Kayoko, head of Ikuta-ryu Koto Music Ichion-sha.
He graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2014, and received the rank of Jun-Shihan (associate instructor) through the Tozan-ryū.
In 2017, he completed a master's program in Japanese music at the Graduate School of Music at the same university.
In 2018, he received his certification as a Tozan-ryū Shihan (master teacher). In 2018 and 2019, he won prizes at the 44th and 45th Tozan-ryū Honkyoku Competition National Championships.
During his time at university, he also studied shakuhachi under Kawamura Taizan, Yamamoto Hōzan II, Fujiwara Dōzan, Nomura Hōzan, and Tokumaru Jūmei of Kinko-ryū.
With the aim of popularizing and developing the shakuhachi, he is actively engaged both in Japan and overseas, giving performances at educational institutions, providing practical instruction, and accepting many performance requests.
